چکیده

By modeling the stripe phase in cuprates as spin gapped stripes coupled to the RVB liquid of preformed electron pairs, I derive the low energy effective theory of the RVB phase variable. It is found that the effect of stripe dynamics (including both longitudinal and transverse modes) leads to incipient temporal phase stiffness in the RVB liquid, which tunes a quantum phase transition toward a superconducting ground state with global phase order. Physical consequences of this quantum criticality are discussed. Typeset using REVTEX 1

Theory of a continuous stripe melting transition in a two-dimensional metal: a possible application to cuprate superconductors.

We construct a theory of continuous stripe melting quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional metals and the associated Fermi surface reconstruction. Such phase transitions are strongly coupled but yet theoretically tractable in situations where the stripe ordering is destroyed by proliferating doubled dislocations of the charge stripe order. The resulting non-Landau quantum critical point ha...

A summary is given of the main outcomes of the quantum-critical-point scenario for high-T c superconductors, developed in the last few years by the Rome group. Phase separation, which commonly occurs in strongly correlated electronic systems, turns into a stripe instability when Coulomb interaction is taken into account. The stripe phase continuously connects the high doping regime, dominated b...

4 A ug 2 00 4 Experimental Investigation of the Competing Orders and Quantum Criticality in Hole - and Electron - Doped Cuprate Superconductors

We investigate the issues of competing orders and quantum criticality in cuprate super-conductors via experimental studies of the high-field thermodynamic phase diagrams and the quasiparticle tunneling spectroscopy. Our results suggest substantial field-induced quantum fluctuations in all cuprates investigated, and their correlation with quasiparticle spectra implies that both electron-(n-type)...

Enhancement of the Nernst effect by stripe order in a high-T(c) superconductor.

The Nernst effect in metals is highly sensitive to two kinds of phase transition: superconductivity and density-wave order. The large, positive Nernst signal observed in hole-doped high-T(c) superconductors above their transition temperature (T(c)) has so far been attributed to fluctuating superconductivity. Here we report that in some of these materials the large Nernst signal is in fact the r...
